First and foremost, a custom
dress shirt is a unique dress item. It is
made to your own specifications and can never be compared to any
“off the peg” shirts. A hand tailored dress shirt
can work wonders for the man. With the best fit it will most certainly
flatter the man’s build and frame. The right choice of cloth,
colour and pattern it will not only enhance his appearance but also
help to rejuvenate parts of a dull coloured suit or jacket.
A dress shirt does not need to be homogenous and monotonous in style
and design. Through subtle detailing of the fabric, pattern, collar,
buttons, pockets and cuffs, every shirt can have its own individual
character.
Fundamentally, a man will always look good in a clean, well pressed
shirt. It provides a refreshing feeling that also signals a sense of
responsibility in that person.
A crisp, well designed tailored shirt, with firm construction over a
soft, Egyptian Cotton fabric, tells a lot about a man’s
attitude and status, especially in the corporate world.
Our Shirting Fabrics
Considered to be the world’s best shirting fabric, Egyptian
Cotton is cultivated mainly along the Nile River Valley in Egypt.
Cloths made of Egyptian Cotton are softer, stronger and finer than any
other cotton cloths. These fine cottons are called "Extra Long Staple,"
or "ELS" cottons. Cheaper quality, single ply cotton staples can be
anything up to 1.2” long, whereas “ELS”
fibres are between 1 3/8” and 2 ½” long,
making them stronger and more durable than other cottons. The tensile
strength of ELS fibers also makes the yarn more resistant to stress,
allowing it to be spun into very fine yarns with high thread counts,
thus producing stronger, smoother and more luxurious cloths.
In the late 1800s, Sea Island cotton was brought to Egypt and crossed
with local tree cotton. Over the years the plant was repeatedly inbred
to produce today’s “Egyptian Cotton”.
2 Ply Egyptian Cotton
Two individual “ELS” fibres are spun together to
make one, single, twisted yarn. The yarn is then tightly woven,
producing a very strong, smooth and luxurious cloth that will not
“pill” around the neck like cheaper, single ply
cottons.
Being a natural fibre, shirts made from Egyptian Cotton will feel
cooler in warm climates and warmer in cold climates. It is the ideal
shirting cloth that breaths, makes up well, handles well and is
extremely smooth on the body. The only downside is, they are also more
expensive.
All John Creed shirts are hand cut and sewn to the highest tailoring
standards, using only the finest quality, 2ply Egyptian Cotton.
